I have always wanted to be a teacher. I wanted to impact the lives of people and let them know that they mattered. I also did not mind the idea of bossing people around. I remember wanting to become a history teacher, as it was my favorite subject in school. I will never forget what my history teacher, Mr. Vitek, said to me. "History teachers are a dime a dozen, go for something else." I could not think of anything else to pursue.
I began a series of customer service jobs outside of high school and in college when I began to realize what I enjoyed doing, customer service. No I did not want to be that person who worked a customer service job paying minimum wage for the rest of my life. I wanted to lead people into taking that step into their career path, or at least give them a wake up call on what life is really like in society. High school did not prepare me for what life would be like: buying a car, a home, working two jobs to pay for a car and a home. Utility bills, food bills, buying clothes, maxing out a credit card and how that would affect my credit. I needed to understand this if I was going to get myself out of the hole of barely surviving adulthood and horribly affecting my credit, dooming myself to buy very used cars and living in a HUD home.
So I pursued my Bachelor's in Business Management with specialization in Human Resource Management. I specialized in Human Resource Management because if I was going to fire someone, I better do it legally. I wanted to understand as a woman what my rights were as a protected class and the opportunity to become a mother someday, and how I would be protected at a job when I chose to become a mom. I wanted to tell people to understand what is right and what is wrong both ethically and legally in the realm of Business. I wanted to leave an impact on people's lives so they knew that they did matter.
I love this. I love knowing that I am making an impact in someone's life. To know that they will go into the world with hopefully a sense of purpose and know that they can make a difference too. You can do this in any job. You can always make a difference. But how awesome is it to know that if someone isn't doing something right (or legal) you can help them change or you can find someone who can do it right and do it legal.
